St. Paul in I Corinthians Chapter 12 spells out that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to the earnest seekers and God has set those persons with His special gifts in the church, first apostles, second prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Also St. Peter writes that every one who has received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Professor Chandra Baskar, a gift of God to the church, society and many individuals is a chosen vessel of God. Many have been blessed by the various gifts that God has given her that God’s name is glorified through her.
Hailing from a very good Christian family with good Christian traditions she was nurtured and nourished in Christian faith and Word of God by her parents, Church and she always had a longing to serve God. She was Professor in History in Sarah Tucker College, Tirunelveli from 1970 – 2006 and once she received the call to be an evangelist and prophet she started her ministry with the students in the College and gradually God’s name was glorified through her to the church and society as well.
The prayer cell she started for the students brought a large number of students with personal problems and crises to her. Her prayers with compassion, counselling as prompted by the Holy Spirit encouraged the needy souls and many were benefited by her ministry. The gifts of the Holy Spirit operating in her are manifested in her words of prophesy, evil spirits being cast away and words of comfort and timely counselling that has helped the students to find Jesus as the only true God and light of the world. The parents also came to her for prayers, solution of problems and counselling. Her friends and colleagues sought her help in times of need and crisis and she had been instrumental in bringing many souls to Christ, delivering people from the clutches of devil and bringing consolation and comfort through her prophetic ministry.
Prof. Chandra Baskar went from village to village mainly working among the women folk, praying for their needs and giving God’s message. Mrs. Lydia Jason, the then bishop’s wife and President, Women’s Fellowship in Tirunelveli Diocese found in her a right person to conduct Women’s conference, Retreats for women and Fasting prayers. Along with Mrs. Lydia Jason she served the Lord reaching the unreached with enthusiasm in the small and obscure villages. Her prayers with burden for deliverance from family problems and clutches of the evil spirits consoled the broken hearted souls, brought the broken homes together again, the sick were healed and mighty miracles were performed in the name of Jesus that the villages rejoiced over her ministry.
Her care and concern for the poor gave her the burden to build a church in a village Vallampatti. Her husband Prof. Baskaran was of great help to her in church construction. Collecting money from relatives and friends and with their own sacrificial giving the Baskars have built a beautiful Church in Vallampatti for Rs. 12, 00, 000 and they have handed it over to Madurai Diocese. She visits this village and the villages near by frequently to help the women folk here who are economically exploited, socially down trodden and demoralized. With the financial support given by the brother of Prof. Baskaran, Rev. Ranjan Samuel, (Christ Church of India in U.S.A.) she has also started a Sewing Institute for the women folk here. It is of immense help to them to become more independent and progress monetarily. This speaks vividly of her love for God and love for her neighbours and also her desire that spiritually and materially people should be taken care of.
All the God given talents of Prof. Chandra Baskar are used for the glory of God. Her art of writing and her ability to speak are chiefly used in her ministry to the glory of God. She has written many tracts and distributed them among her students. She has also written two books “Thirst” and “Ask”. They are her outstanding contributions through her writing skill and God has made use of these books to be of great comfort to many readers. Mainly these books contain the testimonies of the people who have received deliverance and God’s blessings through her ministry of healing, casting out the devils and prophesy.
Message through Media is another ministry of Prof. Chandra Baskar. A local Christian T.V. Channel, Jesus the King Gospel Television, telecasts the messages of her regularly and at present she gives three messages a week and those who view these programs are greatly benefited by it. Every Thursday she gives messages prayerfully prepared with Bible as the basis that help the viewers to know more about the love of Jesus, His power and they enable multitudes to taste His love. Hannah’s Prayer Time, telecast every Sunday is a Family Session In this session she counsels how to build a happy Christian home and her practical tips given from the lives of people to whom she has ministered help people to solve the common problems in a Christian family life. Another program titled Song of Songs is an interesting study of how and in what situation the ancient and modern hymn writers both in English and Tamil have written the songs. All these T.V. programs are very popular mainly among the Non Christians and secret believers of Jesus Christ and they report that these messages are inspiring, instructive and instrumental to know more about Jesus. She also conducts a prayer session, Mizpa Prayer Time, a live telecast and prays for the prayer requests of the viewers over the telephone. Miracles do happen and prayers are answered in a mighty way that God’s name is glorified.
God moves in a mysterious way and God uses Professor Chandra Baskar also in an unusual way, making her a blessing to many in a wonderful manner. Starting her career as a teacher, her implicit obedience to the call of God to serve Him as a prophet, evangelist and preacher was pleasing to the Lord and endowing her with spiritual gifts God hade made her instrumental in building His Kingdom on this earth in a special way.
Professors S.D. Baskaran and Professor Chandra Baskar are blessed with a daughter Mrs. Jaya Christina who is a Software engineer and her husband Mr. Anand Paul, also a Software Engineer. They are blessed with a little girl Keerthana Eva Paul and it is a pleasure to see this happy home serving the Lord faithfully.
